A PRACTICAL WORKSHOP ON COUNSELLING THEORIES & HELPING SKILLS

5 Days or 30 Hours

This counselling skills training is targeted at those with no prior background in counselling but want to respond to the current needs of society by lending a listening ear coupled with sound psychological support.
The workshop equips these ‘people-helpers’ with counselling knowledge and skills to better understand the needs of those they encounter in various environments and carry out therapeutic conversations that effect positive changes in thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
It also provides individuals with the necessary skills and competence to act as helpers in NGOs, social work environments, or social aid ministries centred on mental health and emotional support.

At some point in our careers, each of us will have encountered negativity in the workplace that has impacted our job performance. This can be the result of negative experiences from our childhood that continue to affect us into adulthood. This is a common part of life that we must face.
However, if you are feeling increasingly overwhelmed by challenging situations, preventing yourself from reaching your career goals due to a negative self-perception, or if your self-talk is negative, this workshop is for you. It will focus on self-criticism in the workplace, exploring what it is and providing techniques and strategies to transform it into self-improvement.

The use of counselling skills is highlighted due to its advantages over other forms of helping, including its effectiveness in providing personal problem-solving, decision-making that leads to lasting results, and fostering growth and development.

SUPPORTING COLLEAGUES THROUGH DIFFICULT TIMES

When a member of the work community experiences episodes of chronic illness, diagnosis of serious illness, or loss of a family member, our first instinct is to extend an offer of support. Yet we often pause as we feel awkward, uncomfortable and not sure about what to say. Research tells us that working among supportive team members can make a huge difference to the colleague who is managing the difficulty. This session provides the basics on how to reach out and help. It offers information on behavioural signals of distress, listening techniques, and supportive messages to deliver. The outcome of the session is to reinforce simple steps that help in creating a supportive team environment.

Almost every workplace has a diverse blend of personalities and preferences, therefore it is expected that there will be some dispute and conflict. Not all employees are the same; some people are more easy going than the others, some personalities are easier to interact with than others.

Often, we’re fearful and scared to have conflict, and not having a happy and amicable team can make our work very difficult. However, not all conflict is bad. Conflict can lead to positive growth and change. Thus, it is important that managers need to learn how to communicate and facilitate a positive working relationship with any personality type to explore how to reach resolutions that are agreeable to all parties involved and get them focused on moving forward as a team.

This session will teach leaders how to apply conflict management strategies that will boost performance and increase collaboration amongst their team, whilst examining the role of attitudes and perceptions, along with how to make the most of their diverse relationships with different kinds of people.
